Eminent Malayalam Poet P Narayana Kurup Passes Away at 92
Renowned poet and writer P Narayana Kurup passed away at his residence in Peroorkada, Thiruvananthapuram, on Saturday at the age of 92. He was a towering figure in Malayalam literature, known for his profound contributions to poetry, literary criticism, drama, and music.
Literary Accolades and Honors
Kurup was a two-time winner of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award, receiving the prestigious honor in 1969 and again in 1991. He also received the Odakuzhal award, the Kerala Panini award, and the Vallathol award. In 2022, he was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in recognition of his distinguished service in the field of literature and education.
Governor Pays Tribute
Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar paid homage to the late poet in a social media post, describing him as a rare genius who deeply absorbed the great traditions of Malayalam literature and left an indelible mark on poetry and literary criticism. "His multifaceted genius, spanning profound knowledge and erudition in poetry, criticism, drama, music, Indian cultural heritage, and philosophy, was a true cultural asset to the people of Kerala," Arlekar said.
