Preity Zinta on Replacing Kareena Kapoor in Kal Ho Naa Ho: 'It Was in My Destiny'
Preity Zinta on Replacing Kareena in Kal Ho Naa Ho

In a past episode of Koffee With Karan, filmmaker Karan Johar revisited an early casting decision for the 2003 film 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', directed by debutant Nikkhil Advani and written by Johar alongside Niranjan Iyengar. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta in lead roles. Johar revealed that Kareena Kapoor was initially the first choice for the role that eventually went to Zinta.

Karan Johar Raises the Casting Question

Johar directly addressed the topic during the conversation, asking Zinta: "Kareena was the first choice for the film. How did you feel, actually, stepping into Kareena Kapoor's shoes?" Zinta responded in a composed and thoughtful manner, interpreting the situation as part of a larger creative process.

Preity Zinta's Composed Response

Zinta emphasized that timing plays a major role in opportunities. She stated, "This film was in my destiny." Her response reflected acceptance and confidence in how the role eventually came to her. Rather than viewing it as a setback, she framed it as a natural progression.

A Relatable Analogy

Zinta further elaborated on her approach to such casting situations using a relatable comparison. She said, "Somebody else asked me this question ages ago, and I said, if you go to a store, you try on a pair of jeans, and they fit you well, but you don't buy them, it doesn't mean they're your jeans. You know the next person who comes tries them on and buys them."

Initial Reaction After Hearing the Script

Zinta also recalled her first reaction after being approached for the film. She shared that the script immediately caught her attention. She was curious about the story and its emotional depth. She added, "I remember when you called me, and I said, okay, can I hear the script and once I heard the script? I was like, 'Why didn't Kareena want to do this film?' And then it was all over the place. Kareena was the first choice."

'Kal Ho Naa Ho's Legacy

Even years after its release, the film remains widely discussed for its storytelling and performances. The supporting cast included Jaya Bachchan, Sushma Seth, Reema Lagoo, Lillete Dubey, and Delnaaz Irani. Set in New York City, the story follows Naina Catherine Kapur, played by Zinta, and her emotional journey involving Aman Mathur and Rohit Patel.
