Just days later, Kyle became unresponsive while testing a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, and was taken to a hospital in Charlotte. He later died due to complications from severe pneumonia and sepsis. Busch's final NASCAR Cup Series start came at the All-Star Race on May 17, where he finished 17th. He had been preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 before his hospitalization. Earlier reports indicated he had been dealing with a sinus illness in the weeks leading up to his death.
