Scarlett Johansson to Star in Ari Aster's 'Scapegoat'

Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the upcoming film directed by Ari Aster, a favorite among cinephiles. The film, titled 'Scapegoat', is written by Aster and will be distributed by A24, which has released his previous four films, according to 'Deadline'.

Production Details

Aster, whose satire 'Eddington' premiered at Cannes last year, will produce the film alongside his partner Lars Knudsen through their Square Peg banner. As with all Aster films, plot details are being kept under wraps.

Since the release of his hit horror film 'Hereditary', Aster's scripts have drawn significant attention due to their uniqueness and originality. After spending the end of last year writing, 'Scapegoat' became his original script, and his top choice to star was Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson's Busy Schedule

Securing Johansson was no easy task, as the Oscar nominee already had a very busy shooting schedule in 2026, including starring in the next 'Exorcist' film at Universal and shooting the next 'Batman' sequel opposite Robert Pattinson later this summer. Sources say after reading the script, Johansson was fully committed to starring in the film, and producers were on board for a shoot later this year to accommodate her busy schedule.

Johansson is coming off an equally busy 2025, which included helping relaunch the 'Jurassic World' franchise with 'Jurassic World: Rebirth'. That film, which hit theaters in July, grossed $868 million worldwide and has a sequel in the works.

She recently made her directorial debut with the Sony Pictures Classics drama 'Eleanor the Great', which world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
