Shekhar Suman's Victorian-Style Mumbai Penthouse Tour

Shekhar Suman's residence is more than just a luxurious abode; it is a reflection of his personality, memories, and life journey. The four-storey Victorian-style penthouse in Mumbai, designed in collaboration with his wife Alka, seamlessly blends English-style design with personal touches such as pastel colours, antique furniture, rare collectibles, and items collected from their travels around the world.

Shekhar Suman's House Impresses Farah Khan

During a vibrant home tour with filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan for her YouTube episode, the house leaves an instant impression. As she steps inside, Farah remarks, “Guys, I have not seen a house like this in Lokhandwala. Not Lokhandwala, I have not seen a house like this in Bombay. You will feel that you have come to London.” The interiors offer a transportive feel, where every element of the decor adds to a larger story rather than just enhancing the space. However, Suman brings the attention back to what truly matters. Reflecting on the essence of a home, he says, “Let me tell you, no matter how beautiful a house you make, no matter how big a house you make, a house is made by the family.” He further adds, “If you get a small house or a big house, then it’s of no use.”

Shekhar Suman's Living Room and Bedroom Details

The living room brings everything together with comfortable seating, a decorative fireplace-style console, and layered decor. Chandeliers, table lamps, and wall lights create a warm and cozy feel. Items like bust sculptures, vases, and framed artwork are placed neatly, giving the room a well-arranged, gallery-like look. Large glass doors open to the balcony, connecting the indoor space with the outdoors. One of the main highlights is the detailed chess table, which looks more like a collectible than just a game. The designed chess pieces and carved table legs show Shekhar’s love for vintage style.

The bedroom has a calm and simple, hotel-like feel. A neutral-coloured bed is placed against a wooden panelled wall, with matching bedside tables and classic lamps giving off a soft light. Large mirrors on both sides make the room look bigger, while personal photo frames add a warm touch. The colour scheme of ivory, beige, and light wood keeps the space peaceful and clean.

Shekhar Suman Shares Inspiration Behind Design

Unlike the interiors, the balcony has a more easygoing and refreshing feel. Filled with potted plants of different sizes, it gives the impression of a small urban garden. Speaking about what influenced his design choices, Suman shares, “Because of Alka… somewhere, I don’t know, from inside, it was a big wish that whenever we used to go to England, that such a house should be ours.” He also highlights how living with someone who has a strong eye for design can shape your own sensibilities, saying, “Yes, you learn some things while staying with Alka because she is a designer and she has a great sort of taste.”

Shekhar Suman's Home Filled with Personal Stories

Every item in the house seems to hold a story. Referring to the antique chessboard in the living room, he says, “We picked it from New York… it was very expensive. Still we bought it.” These details show how a home’s interiors can go beyond function, reflecting personal memories, dreams, and a sense of identity.
