Shilpa Shinde, widely recognized for her portrayal of Angoori Bhabhi in the popular television series Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai, opened up about her painful exit from the show during a candid podcast with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa. The actress, who left the show at the height of its success, became emotional while discussing the prolonged dispute with the producers and the channel. In a startling revelation, she admitted that she had filed a false sexual harassment complaint against the show's producer, Sanjay Kohli, and claimed she was threatened with being sidelined from the industry.
The Contract Dispute
Shilpa recounted that she was pressured into signing an exclusive contract that would have prevented her from working on any other projects. She stated, "I was being asked to sign a contract that would stop me from working anywhere else. It was a complete bond designed to keep the actor under control and prevent any negotiation for higher pay. Since this wasn't my first show, I refused to agree." She emphasized that the issue was not about needing to work elsewhere but about being controlled and losing her autonomy.
Rapid Filming and Abrupt Exit
According to Shilpa, the production team suddenly wrapped up nearly ten episodes' worth of her scenes in just two days. "The same people who wouldn't grant me leave on non-shooting days suddenly told me, 'You don't have a shoot from tomorrow.' When I asked why, there was no proper explanation. Soon after, news broke that Angoori was no longer part of the show. I felt it was all done to intimidate me," she said.
Threats and Pressure
Shilpa recalled being told directly, "If you don't want to sign it, then leave the show." She responded that she would not continue under those terms, and was then warned, "Then you won't be able to do anything. I will make sure you sit at home." She described this as a shocking attempt to force her into accepting unfavorable conditions.
She also criticized the producers' association, calling it a "white-collar mafia." She mentioned that the artists' association CINTAA even threatened her with a ban. "How can an artists' association ban an artist? A producers' association or a channel can decide not to work with someone, but an association meant to represent artists taking such a stand felt like a monopoly," she explained.
Legal Harassment and Suicidal Thoughts
The pressure escalated with legal notices demanding Rs 12 crore and later Rs 20 crore. Shilpa admitted to feeling overwhelmed and even experiencing suicidal thoughts. "Anyone could have broken down under that pressure. The only thing that kept me going was my belief that if I hadn't done anything wrong, the truth would eventually prevail," she said.
False Allegation Admission
In a shocking confession, Shilpa revealed that she filed a sexual harassment complaint against the producer because she felt she had no other option. "All doors were closed on me. I believed there was no other way out. Coming from a law background, I knew the process. Today, I want to say that the allegations I made were not true. I am admitting this for the first time," she said, breaking down. The matter was eventually settled, and she received her pending payment a few months later.
Current Relationship with Makers
As part of the settlement, both sides agreed not to discuss the issue publicly. However, after more than a decade, Shilpa felt comfortable speaking about it. She noted that despite everything, she eventually worked with the same team again. "Our relationship today is very cordial. We worked together after 11 years on Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai," she concluded.
