Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018, made a successful recovery and returned to the screen in 2022 with the web series 'The Broken News' and as a judge on 'DID Li'l Masters'. Post-recovery, Bendre consciously chose to avoid emotionally draining dark roles, prioritizing her mental health. In a candid interview with News18, she explained her mindset: "I really wanted to play hopeful and lighter roles that would keep me happy and allow me to return pepped up. After a dark period, I didn't want work that could trigger me." She fondly recalled the fun film 'Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega', where the energy on set with Saif Ali Khan was uplifting.
How 'Raakh' Changed Sonali Bendre's Mind
Despite her preference for light-hearted projects, Bendre's latest show 'Raakh' is a dark, intense thriller. She admitted that the project was not on her radar initially. "Raakh wasn't something I was looking for. I wasn't open to it, but it came my way. The script was so compelling, and the character and team were amazing. I couldn't say no. I hope to keep getting such irresistible projects," she shared. She expressed hope that creators see her in unconventional roles, adding, "Every time I felt I wasn't being seen that way, somebody was. It took time, but I'm glad it came to me."
Gratitude for Current Opportunities
While Bendre wished for more screen time in 'Raakh', she believes the experience has opened doors. "It's not the length I like; I would have loved to see more of me. But I'm glad I took the chance; it was an amazing experience." She acknowledged that filmmakers are still figuring out how to cast her, but she focuses on the positives. "At my age today, if I were this age in the nineties, I wouldn't get these roles. That's why I say I'm in a good space. Can it get better? Of course, and I hope it does. But so many stories are being told now; at that time, the scope was limited. I'm grateful," she remarked.
