A hoarding featuring images of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, jailed leader Azam Khan, and Sambhal MP Zia Ur Rehman Barq, along with an objectionable caption, sparked outrage among party leaders and workers in Varanasi on Sunday morning.
Hoarding Installed Near PAC Crossing
The hoarding was installed near the PAC crossing in the Ramnagar area. As news spread, several SP leaders gathered in the trans-Ganga area to protest. They condemned the act, calling it a deliberate attempt by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members to tarnish the image of their leader.
SP Leaders Accuse BJP of Conspiracy
Speaking to the media, SP leaders claimed that Akhilesh Yadav's rising popularity has rattled the opposition. They alleged that the BJP was trying to defame him through such shameful acts. They also stated that the state government was forced to backtrack on the prepaid electricity smart meter scheme due to the SP's strong opposition against irregularities in the project.
Police Intervention and Removal of Hoarding
Upon learning about the protest, Ramnagar police rushed to the spot. In the presence of law enforcement, SP workers climbed the pole and tore down the hoarding, bringing an end to the tense situation. No arrests were reported.
This incident highlights the ongoing political rivalry in Uttar Pradesh, where hoardings and posters often become flashpoints between parties. The SP has vowed to take legal action against those responsible for the hoarding.
