Sutapa Sikdar, the wife of late actor Irrfan Khan, has publicly rejected comedian Pranit More's apology over a viral clip in which an audience member made a misogynistic remark about expecting a 'return' after spending Rs 370 on biryani for a woman, a comment More laughed at before later expressing regret.
Sutapa Sikdar's sharp response
On Wednesday, Sutapa Sikdar took to social media to make her position clear. She reposted a screenshot of More's apology alongside data and statistics on rape cases in India and posed a pointed question in her caption: 'Should women forgive? Always? Why?'
She did not hold back in her assessment of More's conduct, writing, 'Sorry?? After enjoying like a joker to get more laughter from more perverts in the audience? We don't accept your apology; if we do nothing will change (sic).'
Viral clip from Pranit More's stand-up and the backlash
The controversy erupted after a clip from Pranit More's comedy show went viral, featuring audience member Himanshu Jangra stating that spending Rs 370 on chicken biryani for a woman entitled him to a 'return' on the investment. The remark drew widespread criticism online for its misogynistic undertones. More, who had laughed at the comment during the live show, subsequently faced heavy backlash from audiences and public figures alike.
Pranit More's public apology
Pranit More, who also appeared as a contestant on 'Bigg Boss 19', had posted a public apology on his Instagram Stories. He acknowledged that the audience member's comments did not represent his views and admitted to a failure of judgement in the moment.
'I've seen the criticism regarding a recent crowdwork clip. The comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views. Looking back, I should have challenged the remark instead of laughing and moving on. That was a lapse in judgement on my part,' he wrote.
He also confirmed the video had been removed from all platforms to avoid amplifying or normalising such views and thanked those who raised concerns respectfully.
As the controversy continued to intensify, More appeared to have deactivated his Instagram account.
