Teyana Taylor's Kids Shape Her Fashion and Co-Parenting Journey

Teyana Taylor's Daughters Serve as Her Fashion Co-Stylists and Family Anchors

As the glitz and glamour of awards season unfold, Teyana Taylor, the Harlem-born actress and former partner of NBA player Iman Shumpert, has emerged as a red carpet sensation. Her journey includes an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe win for her role in One Battle After Another, where she captivated audiences in designer gowns from Burberry, Schiaparelli, and Tamara Ralph.

Family First: Kids Have Final Say on Fashion Choices

Behind the scenes, Taylor credits her two daughters, Junie, aged 10, and Rue, aged 5, for shaping her iconic looks. "They're my co-stylists," Taylor shared with a laugh in an interview. Her process involves direct collaboration with designers, reviewing sketches, and then seeking her children's approval. "With the big awards shows, I design directly with the designer. And then I turn to my babies like, 'What y'all think about this? Do I do the one with the party in the back or the party in the front?'" she explained via USA Today.

Her daughters actively participate, offering commentary such as, "Ooh, Mommy, what's this?" Taylor added, "They're about to be fashionistas. They definitely have final approval on how I walk out that door." This family dynamic extends beyond fashion, as Taylor recounted a post-Golden Globes moment where her kids insisted on a bedtime story before she could attend after-parties, humorously dubbing it "Club Bed."

Real Mom Moments Amidst Hollywood Glamour

At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Taylor experienced a candid parenting highlight. "The moment it was time for me to get my award, these little rascals were literally on their phones!" she recalled. "I had to tell them midspeech, 'Get off them phones!' It was just so funny, and it brightened up the whole room that I had this real mom moment in the middle of all this." She emphasized that having her daughters with her calms her nerves and makes her proud to inspire them.

Co-Parenting with Iman Shumpert: A Focus on Family Unity

Taylor has been open about co-parenting with ex-husband Iman Shumpert following their divorce, which was finalized in July 2024. In a January interview with Vanity Fair, she described divorce as "grieving the death of a living being," but stressed the importance of maintaining a strong partnership for their children. "I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other," Taylor stated.

She added, "At least for the next 18 years, and being the best co-parents that we can be." Taylor also reassured that infidelity was not a factor in their separation, noting in a statement, "We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children." She emphasized their commitment to family, having spent 10 years together, including 7 years married.

Now, the former couple is dedicated to focusing on their kids post-divorce, showcasing a model of cooperative parenting in the public eye.
