MADURAI: In a startling revelation, priests and temple officials at the Tiruchendur Subramania Swamy Temple were caught allegedly demanding Rs 1,000 per person for VIP darshan from a member of an inspection team led by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Minister S Ramesh. The team had entered the temple premises disguised as ordinary devotees to expose malpractices.
How the Demand Surfaced
The incident came to light when the minister's assistant, standing in the regular queue near the Gopuram entrance while disguised as a devotee, was allegedly offered expedited darshan in exchange for a payment. This confirmed suspicions of a systematic practice within the temple.
Minister's Statement
The inspection was carried out before dawn, with the minister arriving at the temple wearing a mask, following multiple complaints from devotees. Addressing reporters later, Ramesh stated, "We found that money was being collected from devotees and members of the public, and they were being directly taken inside for darshan." He emphasized that priests and temple officials appeared to have acted together in facilitating this practice.
Action Promised Without Favoritism
Ramesh declared that strict action would be taken against all those involved, regardless of their position. "Whoever they are, action will be taken without any discrimination or favouritism," he asserted. He also dismissed social media reports claiming that the accused had been pardoned after submitting apology letters.
"We have only sought explanation letters from them. We asked how they permitted this and why they allowed people inside after collecting money," Ramesh clarified, adding that obtaining explanations is standard procedure before initiating formal action.
Scope of Inspection
The minister revealed that the inspection extended beyond the darshan-related allegations. The team examined various aspects of temple management, including:
- Annadhanam halls (free food distribution centers)
- Temple cleanliness and surroundings
- Revenue streams and infrastructure
- Facilities available to devotees
Ramesh also noted, "We are studying how devotees can have darshan and leave the temple more quickly, and what measures can be introduced for that purpose."
Next Steps
Some inspections are still underway, and a detailed report will be prepared after examining documents and explanations from all concerned parties. The report will be submitted to Chief Minister Vijay, after which appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible.
