Chennai: A complaint was filed on Wednesday with the Chennai Police Commissioner's office seeking legal action against Vijay Dhamu, a TVK candidate elected from Royapuram, after a video of him cutting a cake with a machete during a public celebration went viral on social media.
Complaint Details
The complaint was submitted by G G Siva, 36, a resident of Pulianthope. In his petition, Sivakumar stated that Dhamu participated in a birthday celebration where a cake was cut with a machete in full public view. He also named 'Loyola Mani' and other party functionaries in connection with the event. The complainant highlighted that videos and media reports showed the weapon being used despite objections raised at the venue.
Previous Incidents
The complainant noted that the police had previously registered cases against other individuals involved in similar celebrations using machetes and other weapons in public places. 'Such acts can create fear among the public and disturb peace,' the complaint said, adding, 'It sets a wrong example when elected representatives and political functionaries engage in such activities.'
Police Response
Police officials said they are verifying the authenticity of the videos and gathering details about the celebration. Further inquiry is underway. Authorities are examining the footage and statements to determine if any laws were violated.
The incident has sparked debate about the conduct of public figures and the use of weapons in celebrations. The police are expected to take appropriate action based on their findings.
