Widow, Youth Burned in Kanpur Self-Immolation Over Love Affair

A 29-year-old widow and a local youth, identified as Shekhu (25), sustained serious burn injuries after a woman attempted self-immolation on Saturday evening in Kanjadanpurwa of Kidwai Nagar in Kanpur amid a dispute related to a love affair, police said.

Incident Details

According to Kidwai Nagar police, the woman, who lived in Kanjadpurwa, was into a friendly relation with Shekhu and allegedly pressured him to live with her. On Saturday evening at 7:45 pm, the woman argued with Shekhu over the same issue. During the altercation, she doused herself with petrol and set herself ablaze.

Police said Shekhu rushed to save her after he saw her on fire, but he too caught fire and burned severely. Both sustained critical injuries.

Rescue and Hospitalization

Residents extinguished the fire with great difficulty and informed the Kidwai Nagar police station. Neighbours and family members admitted both of them to hospital in critical condition. The youth was treated at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital (LLR), while the woman’s family members took her to a private hospital located at Naubasta crossing. Police said the condition of both remained extremely critical.

So far, neither side submitted any written complaint at the police station.

Investigation Underway

ACP Babupurwa Dileep Kumar Singh Babupurwa informed that investigations are underway to ascertain circumstances under which the two sustained burn wounds.
