Manoj Pahwa & Ayesha Raza on OTT's Impact: 'Lines Blurring' in Indian Cinema
OTT Reshapes Indian Films: Pahwa & Raza on New Era

The rapid rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming services is fundamentally transforming the landscape of Indian entertainment. This digital revolution is not only changing how audiences consume content but is also reshaping the creative process itself, allowing for greater experimentation and the breaking of long-held stereotypes. Veteran actors Manoj Pahwa and Ayesha Raza, both celebrated for their versatile and often comic performances, recently reflected on this significant shift, highlighting the new opportunities it presents for actors and storytellers alike.

The Blurring Lines of Traditional Cinema

In a conversation with ANI, Manoj Pahwa, whose career spans decades across theatre, film, and television, shared his insights on the OTT boom. He pointed out that the platform's greatest strength lies in its capacity for creative experimentation with diverse subjects, a freedom that was eagerly embraced by audiences, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdowns when viewing options were limited.

"The fun part of OTT is that one can experiment with many different subjects, and the audience has accepted it," Pahwa stated. He further observed that this wave of innovation is now influencing mainstream cinema as well. "The typical stereotypes surrounding a hero, a heroine, a comedian, a villain, and all those things are breaking. The lines are getting blurred. More new stories are coming," he explained, underscoring a pivotal change in industry norms.

Theatre Roots Paving the Way for Versatility

Echoing the sentiment of evolving perceptions, Ayesha Raza emphasised how her background in theatre has been instrumental in her career. She highlighted the liberating 'magic of theatre' which allows an actor to shed inhibitions and explore any character. This foundation, she believes, is crucial as the film industry itself begins to view actors in a new light.

"Coming to films, I feel that it would be lovely to be viewed differently, but I think the time is near, something or the other will be different. I think there's always an option," Raza remarked, expressing optimism about the increasing diversity of roles available to performers beyond traditional typecasting.

Coming Together for 'Single Papa' on Netflix

This discussion comes as the two seasoned actors prepare to share the screen in the upcoming Netflix comedy series, 'Single Papa'. The show, set to premiere on December 12, features Kunal Kemmu in the lead role of Gaurav, navigating the chaotic and humorous challenges of single parenthood.

Manoj Pahwa will be seen portraying Gaurav's father, bringing his signature effortless comic timing to the role. Ayesha Raza will play his on-screen mother. The cast also includes popular digital star Prajakta Koli, known for 'Mismatched'. The series promises to blend heartfelt moments with comedy, as Gaurav tries to balance baby bottles with his often questionable life decisions.

The collaboration between Pahwa and Raza on an OTT platform like Netflix is a testament to the very change they discussed. It represents the industry's move towards content-driven projects where seasoned actors can explore nuanced roles in fresh narratives, further solidifying OTT's role as a major catalyst in the evolution of Indian storytelling.
