Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja, who passed away at the age of 82, will be laid to rest with full state honours in his hometown Theni on June 11. The Tamil Nadu government announced the honour in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema.
State Honours for the Legendary Director
The state government declared that the final rites would be conducted with full state honours, a mark of respect for the iconic filmmaker who shaped Tamil cinema for over five decades. Bharathiraja's body will be kept at his residence in Theni for the public to pay their last respects before the funeral.
Life and Legacy
Bharathiraja, known for his realistic portrayal of rural life, directed classics like 16 Vayathinile, Sigappu Rojakkal, and Kizhakke Pogum Rail. He was a pioneer of the 'realistic cinema' movement in Tamil Nadu and mentored many actors and technicians. His work earned him several accolades, including National Film Awards and Padma Shri.
The film fraternity and fans have been mourning his loss, with tributes pouring in from across the country. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed condolences and ordered the state honours for the funeral.
