Feminichi Fathima Director Fasil Muhammed Reflects on Film's Global Resonance
The Malayalam film Feminichi Fathima, celebrated for its powerful woman-centric narrative, has achieved remarkable success, securing top honors at the International Film Festival of Kerala 2024 and the Kerala State Film Awards last year. Its director, Fasil Muhammed, has since embarked on an extensive journey with the film, sharing its message far and wide. Originally from Ponnani, Fasil moved to Kochi with cinematic dreams and is now recognized as a Headliner 2025, marking a significant milestone in his career.
'I Came to Kochi for Cinema': Fasil's Humble Beginnings
Fasil relocated to Kochi nearly eight years ago, immediately after completing his studies, driven by a passion for filmmaking. During this period, he took on various odd jobs and worked as a spot assistant editor to sustain himself. "My initial plan was to study an editing course and then become an assistant director," Fasil recalls. "Kochi has always been the cinema hub in my mind. I've witnessed the city transform over the years, with developments like the metro and other changes unfolding before my eyes. I built many contacts here, but cinema opportunities were scarce. That's when I decided to create cinema from my roots. I returned home and filmed in my own yard, then brought the project back to Kochi for all post-production work."
He adds, "Now, I'm so familiar with Kochi that I know every nook and corner, every tea shop. This city is where I've settled and even met the music director for Feminichi Fathima, who offered me a room when I first arrived."
'The Women Around Me Inspired the Film': Crafting a Female-Centric Narrative
Creating a film from a woman's perspective is no small feat, but Fasil drew inspiration from his personal experiences. "I spent most of my youth surrounded by my mother, sister, and aunts, interacting closely with them and observing their emotions and thoughts," he explains. "The film was initially inspired by a small event in my thatha's life. All my previous scripts have also been female-centric, likely because I grew up among women and understand their struggles. I often listen in on local conversations with women around my home, which deeply influences my writing."
'People Who Have Watched It Defend My Film Now': Global Audience Reception
After Feminichi Fathima reached wider audiences through theatres and OTT platforms, Fasil noticed a heartening trend. "When people who haven't even seen the film try to criticize it on social media, those who have watched it—ordinary women from various backgrounds—come forward to defend it, regardless of religion," he shares. "Many approach me to share similar personal experiences. At the Bangalore Film Festival, someone hugged me in tears, saying it 'hurt so good.' During a theatre visit, another viewer told me, 'it's my story.' This confirms the film has reached its intended impact."
Interestingly, Fasil observes that audiences outside Kerala have responded more enthusiastically. "During screenings in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bhubaneswar, I noticed more laughter in theatres compared to Kerala, suggesting a broader appeal."
'People's Response Inspired Me to Search for Better Content': Future Projects
With the film's success, Fasil feels motivated rather than pressured for his next project. "When I think about future work, I aim to create something even better than Feminichi Fathima," he states. "At the State award ceremony, Mammookka (Mammootty) remarked, 'Such films will only happen in Malayalam,' which reinforced that we made something special. This has inspired me to seek out superior content."
Reflecting on a memorable encounter, Fasil adds, "Meeting Mammootty in Kochi was surreal. We had a long discussion about the film, and he inquired about how I directed the actors and other filming details. It was an unforgettable experience."
'Dulquer's Name Helped the Film Reach More People': Distribution Breakthrough
Feminichi Fathima's theatrical release was facilitated by Dulquer Salmaan's production company, a turning point in its journey. Fasil explains, "After IFFK, I wanted to bring the film to theatres, but distributors were hesitant, citing a lack of 'artistes.' Even mentioning awards didn't sway them. I initially reached out to Dulquer to pitch another story, but during a meeting with his team, I showed them Feminichi Fathima's trailer. They asked if it had been released theatrically, and upon learning it hadn't due to distribution issues, they requested a preview link. The very next day, they expressed interest in distributing it. I believe Dulquer's name significantly boosted the film's reach and accessibility."
