From Thamburu to Stardom: Jelina's Journey as Malayalam TV's Iconic Child Villain

Remember the evil Thamburu of Vanambadi? The little girl who relentlessly tortured the main protagonist, Anumol, in the popular Malayalam television series? For the Malayali audience, she was a character to despise, and even as years passed and the actress grew into a teenager, viewers still see her as that same Thamburu. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Jelina, the then-child actress, reminisced about her acting journey that began when she was just 3.5 years old.

Early Beginnings and Rise to Fame

Jelina started her acting career by playing the daughter of Sajan Surya in the beloved show Kumkumapoovu. Following this evergreen series, she quickly gained attention as a child artist with memorable roles in shows like Chandanamazha and Satyam Shivan Sundaram. However, it was her portrayal of Thamburu in Vanambadi that catapulted her to household name status among Malayali viewers.

"I feel so blessed that I got to play a character like Thamburu. Even today, most people don't know my name; they love to call me Thamburu. Though they didn't like Thamburu for torturing Anumol, they all loved me," Jelina shared, highlighting the unique bond she formed with her audience through this negative role.

Fan Reactions: Love and Pinches

Along with overwhelming praise, Jelina also recalls receiving some hurtful pinches from viewers. "During Vanambadi, people would recognize me as Thamburu and come talk to me just as if I were one of their family members. But, once, when I went to a shopping mall with my family, a lady came to me and pinched me, asking, 'Why are you troubling Anumol like this?' Though she did it out of love, it hurt me a lot, and my eyes got welled up. I asked my mom why she did it. Amma consoled me that it is a recognition of my character. Though it hurt a lot, I was happy that people had accepted my character," she added, illustrating the intense emotional connection fans had with her performance.

Acting Prowess and Techniques

Despite the character's negative shades, Jelina's acting prowess was widely appreciated by viewers. From emotional scenes to dramatic sequences, she managed to leave a lasting impression. "Back then, I didn't know anything about acting. What I did was, before every shot, I would think, 'What will I do if this situation ever happens to me?' This helps me enact. I even made sure not to use glycerin much, as it would bring artificiality to the scene," said the actress, who played Thamburu at the age of 11, showcasing her natural talent and dedication to authenticity.

Balancing Acting and Studies

Recently, Jelina was seen playing Parukutty in the show Mounaragam. Although she took a break from the industry due to her class XII exams, she expressed her commitment to balancing both worlds. "I would put my best efforts into taking acting along with my studies," she stated, emphasizing her passion for the craft and her determination to pursue it alongside academic responsibilities.

Jelina's journey from a 3.5-year-old actress to a beloved figure in Malayalam television underscores the impact of memorable characters and the resilience required to navigate fame from a young age.
