Director Rishith Shetty's Maarnami: A Coastal Kannada Love Story Inspired by Dasara
As director Rishith Shetty prepares for the release of his debut feature film Maarnami on February 20, he reveals the project's unique origin story. The idea for this cinematic venture took shape during a casual Dasara festival conversation with a close friend. "He gave me a line around Dasara, and we built a complete love story around that initial spark," Shetty explains, highlighting how traditional celebrations can inspire modern storytelling.
Rooted in Coastal Kannada Culture
The film's title itself is deeply connected to Shetty's personal heritage and regional identity. "Maarnami in coastal Kannada dialect translates to Mahanavami, one of the significant days during the Dasara festival," the director clarifies. Hailing from Mangaluru, Shetty emphasizes his intimate understanding of the local culture. "I know Mangaluru's traditions, values, and way of life inside out. It would not make sense artistically or authentically for me to direct a film set in any other location," he states, underscoring his commitment to genuine regional representation.
Production and Creative Inspirations
Produced by Gunadya Productions and Shilpa Nishanth, Maarnami draws creative inspiration from the classic Kannada composition Dharani Mandala Madhyadolage. This poetic work is prominently featured in the film's trailer, narrated by acclaimed actor Sudeep. Shetty elaborates on the thematic connection: "The song's allegory about the tiger and the cow perfectly mirrors the internal conflict between good and bad within my lead character. It provides a philosophical foundation for the narrative's emotional journey."
Casting Decisions and Genre Blend
The director had clear vision when casting the principal roles. Actor Ritvvikk Mathad was his immediate and only choice for the character Chetu. "We have previously collaborated on television projects, so I knew instinctively that he possessed the right emotional depth and screen presence for this role," Shetty recalls. For the female lead, actress Chaitra Achar joined the project after the script was finalized. "Once the screenplay was complete, I realized no other performer could embody this character's complexity and charm," he explains confidently.
Maarnami skillfully blends multiple cinematic genres into a cohesive family entertainer. The film incorporates elements of:
- High-energy action sequences
- Heartfelt romance
- Intense dramatic moments
- Warm family emotions
Ahead of its nationwide release, the film has already held special premieres in Mangaluru and Mysuru, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. "The audience response so far has been tremendously encouraging and supportive," Shetty shares with evident enthusiasm, indicating promising prospects for this regional cinematic offering.
