Manipuri Community in Kolkata Brings BAFTA-Winning Film 'Boong' to the City
The Manipuri community in Kolkata is set to deliver a cinematic treat to the city by organizing a special screening of the film 'Boong' this Saturday. This historic Manipuri movie has made waves by winning a BAFTA for the Best Children's and Family Film 2026, marking it as the first and only Indian film to ever secure a BAFTA award.
Overcoming Screening Challenges for a Regional Gem
While 'Boong' is releasing pan India this Friday, the Manipuri community in Kolkata faced uncertainty about its availability in local theaters due to its regional-language status. In response, the group Manipuri in Kolkata (MIK) took proactive steps by approaching several theaters in the city to request a special screening. Rojit Keisham, general secretary of MIK, explained, "Given the huge demand among our community in Kolkata for the film's screening, we approached three to four theatres, seeking a special screening. Miraj Cinema responded. We all are looking forward to the Saturday screening."
The Story and Significance of 'Boong'
'Boong' tells the poignant story of a young boy's search for his missing father. In a heartfelt quest to bring his father back to his mother as a surprise gift, the protagonist, played by Gugun Kipgen, embarks on a risky journey from Imphal to the Myanmar border. The film, directed by Lakshmipriya, is a coming-of-age drama that wrapped up shooting in the border town of Moreh just days before ethnic violence erupted between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023. Moreh was among the worst-hit areas, and while the violence has subsided, reconciliation remains elusive. In her BAFTA acceptance speech, Lakshmipriya prayed for peace in Manipur, highlighting the film's deeper social resonance.
Support from the Film Industry and Community
The cast of 'Boong' includes Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, and Vikram Kochhar. Lakshmipriya, who has previously worked on various Bollywood projects, made her debut in Manipuri cinema with this film, which received backing from notable figures like Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Pradipta Paul, manager of Miraj Cinema in New Town, expressed enthusiasm for the screening, stating, "When MIK proposed the special screening, we agreed not only because it won a BAFTA award but also because we need to encourage regional-language films. I am sure Kolkata, which loves art and films, will have enough viewers."
Recognition from Political Leaders
The BAFTA win for 'Boong' garnered congratulations from various public figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who both took to social media to applaud the film's team. This recognition underscores the film's impact beyond the cinematic realm, celebrating its achievement as a milestone for Indian regional cinema.
This special screening in Kolkata not only honors the film's BAFTA success but also serves as a testament to the community's dedication to promoting cultural diversity and supporting regional storytelling in the heart of the city.
