From Behind the Microphone to In Front of the Camera
For nearly ten years, Manoj Sharma found professional contentment working exclusively behind the scenes as a dedicated voice-over and dubbing artist. Acting, he openly admits, was never part of his original career blueprint. Yet, in a surprising organic turn of events, Sharma now finds himself steadily carving out a distinct space as an on-screen actor in the Kannada television industry.
A Family's Initial Hesitation and Spiritual Acceptance
"I never imagined that I would become an actor," Manoj Sharma reveals in an exclusive conversation. "For almost a decade, I was perfectly happy being behind the microphone. I genuinely enjoyed off-camera work, and my traditionally rooted family also preferred that I stayed out of the spotlight." Coming from an orthodox background, the initial idea of appearing on screen was met with considerable family hesitation. They had consistently supported his voice-over career precisely because it kept him behind the scenes; acting was not something they had ever envisioned for him.
However, fate intervened unexpectedly when Sharma received a random call from the production team of the spiritual television show Shri Guru Raghavendra Mahatme. "I was completely confused and kept wondering if they had dialed the right number," he recalls with a laugh. "Are they really looking to cast me as an actor?" After detailed discussions, he eventually agreed to take the role, largely influenced by the show's spiritual and respectful nature. His family also consented for the same reason, feeling that if he had to appear on screen, it should be for something meaningful and divine.
The Accidental Actor and Disciplined Approach
Although acting was an unplanned move, Sharma acknowledges that many colleagues had previously encouraged him to try it, especially for humor-oriented roles. He never took it seriously until the opportunity literally called him. "For me, acting happened purely by accident," he states. Despite this shift, he approaches both crafts with equal discipline and dedication. Thorough rehearsal before any shoot is his mantra to avoid retakes and ensure smooth performance.
Following his debut, Sharma appeared in Adi Lakshmi Purana, portraying the lead actor's supportive and affectionate cousin brother. When another acting offer arrived, his family was once again skeptical, but his wife Srividya's unwavering support, even after welcoming their newborn, gave him the confidence to proceed. "Her support was crucial at that time," he emphasizes.
Voice-Over as a Foundation and Future Aspirations
Interestingly, Sharma believes his extensive voice-over background has provided a significant edge in his acting career. "Voice-over work taught me invaluable lessons in voice modulation, strategic pauses, and emotional delivery," he explains. "I apply that same understanding to bring depth and effectiveness to my on-screen dialogues." Social media has further helped audiences connect the familiar voice with the new face they see on television.
Even as his acting profile grows, Sharma is unequivocal about one thing: voice-over will always remain his first love and priority. He continues to accept voice-over projects and has noticed an increase in such opportunities since his on-screen appearances. Recalling his nerve-wracking yet memorable first day on a TV set, he credits thorough preparation for his confidence. Acting has personally boosted his self-assurance, aiding both professional and personal growth.
Looking ahead, Manoj Sharma hopes to expand his acting career further, potentially into films. "Five years from now, I aim to explore more acting opportunities across different industries and languages," he concludes. "The recognition from my voice-over work has already opened many doors, and I am excited to see where this journey leads."
