Priya Anand: Balaramana Dinagalu Is More Than a Gangster Drama

Actor Priya Anand believes that her upcoming film Balaramana Dinagalu is far more than a conventional gangster drama. Returning to Kannada cinema after a hiatus, she stars in director KM Chaitanya’s period piece, which she describes as a story rich in emotional depth. Produced by Padmavathi Jayaram and Shreyas under the Padmavathi Films banner, the film is slated for theatrical release on June 26.

Why Priya Anand Signed the Film

In an interview with Bangalore Times, Priya revealed that it was Chaitanya’s unique approach to storytelling that convinced her to join the project. “I wasn’t very familiar with Chaitanya sir’s filmography, but during our first conversation, his intent with the film and the way he wanted to present the characters really stood out,” she said.

A Fresh Take on the Gangster Genre

Priya emphasized that Balaramana Dinagalu offers a refreshing perspective on the gangster genre. “Even though it’s set in the 1980s and is a gangster film, it isn’t built around machismo. I get to be an active participant in Balarama’s life, influencing his daily decisions and life choices. In many ways, the film explores the vulnerable, human side of these larger-than-life characters, and that’s what made the role exciting for me,” she explained.

Praise for Co-Star Vinod Prabhakar

The actor also had high praise for her co-star Vinod Prabhakar. “It’s rare to see someone who hasn’t forgotten why they wanted to become an actor in the first place. His passion is infectious,” she noted.

Appeal to Audiences

Priya acknowledged the challenges of drawing audiences to theaters in the current entertainment landscape. “Watching a film today is an investment of both time and money. The filmmakers must make that worthwhile. I hope the music by Santosh Narayanan and the story create enough curiosity for audiences to come and experience Balaramana Dinagalu on the big screen,” she said.

The film’s period setting and emotional narrative, combined with Santosh Narayanan’s music, aim to offer a cinematic experience that goes beyond typical gangster fare.
