Kanwar Dhillon on Battling Monotony in Daily Soaps and Film Dreams
Kanwar Dhillon: Fighting Monotony in TV, Selective on Films

Kanwar Dhillon Opens Up About Creative Challenges in Long-Running TV Shows

For television actor Kanwar Dhillon, achieving longevity in the demanding world of daily soaps presents a unique array of challenges. However, he firmly believes that monotony does not have to be an inevitable part of the journey. Currently captivating audiences in the popular series Udne Ki Asha, Dhillon candidly addresses how portraying the same character over extended periods can severely test an actor's creative stamina and resilience.

The Struggle Against Monotony in Television

One does face monotony when a TV show continues for many years, Dhillon explains. So when you're playing one character for such a long duration, the script absolutely must incorporate some variations and twists. This ensures that even as an actor, you don't begin to feel fatigued or disengaged from your role. He expresses gratitude that this has not been his experience with his current project. Luckily, that hasn't happened with my current show because we consistently keep on doing different things and introducing new narrative elements, he shares, highlighting the importance of dynamic storytelling in sustaining performer interest.

The Toll of Daily Television and an Unplanned Hiatus

Yet, the relentless and demanding pace of daily television production is not without its significant toll. Kanwar Dhillon recalls a specific instance where he attempted to orchestrate a deliberate career break after concluding a previous project, only for unforeseen circumstances to completely derail those well-intentioned plans.

I had tried once to take a proper break after finishing a show, he recounts. I genuinely wanted to take a full year off to rest, recharge, and explore other creative mediums and opportunities. I had even signed a contract for a web series, but unfortunately, that particular show did not go on floors as scheduled. Then, I ended up breaking my leg in an accident, and immediately after that, the global COVID-19 pandemic happened. Consequently, what was supposed to be a brief hiatus just extended uncontrollably for more than a year and a half.

A Reshaped Perspective and Career Philosophy

This unexpected and prolonged break profoundly reshaped his professional outlook and philosophy. That entire experience taught me a valuable lesson that it's always better to go with the flow and adapt to circumstances, Dhillon reflects. Today, what truly matters to me above all else is the quality of the script, the vision and capability of the maker, and the reputation and support of the channel. These are the core factors that guide my choices now.

Selective Approach to Film Aspirations

The son of esteemed veteran actor Deep Dhillon, Kanwar grew up immersed in the world of cinema and films. Despite this influential background, he maintains a highly selective and principled approach regarding his own aspirations in the film industry.

There were certainly opportunities early on in my career, he explains, but they were predominantly very small roles or cameo appearances. That is something I never wanted to do just for the sake of shifting mediums from television to films. For me, any film role has to be something substantial, meaty, and meaningful.

He elaborates further on his cinematic dreams, stating, Films are undoubtedly a dream for me, of course, but it will not be a compromise dream. I am committed to not taking up any role just for the sake of being in a movie. It has to be a character and a project that I genuinely want to live and breathe, not just perform for the sake of doing it. The role must resonate deeply with me as an artist.
