Director Anubhuti Kashyap Unveils the Creative Genesis of Netflix Film 'Accused'
Director Anubhuti Kashyap, currently basking in widespread acclaim for her recently released streaming movie 'Accused', has opened up about the fascinating origins of the film's narrative. In an exclusive conversation with IANS during the promotional activities for the movie, Kashyap delved into the core elements that propel the story forward, emphasizing how accusations of sexual harassment against the lead character profoundly affect her relationship with her queer partner.
The Core Idea and Research Behind 'Accused'
Kashyap revealed to IANS that the foundational concept for 'Accused' originated from Netflix itself. The streaming giant proposed building a story around a woman accused of sexual harassment, which served as the initial spark for the entire project. From this base, the director and her team embarked on extensive research, uncovering a surprising number of real-world cases where women have faced such allegations, including notable instances within India.
"We researched and then we started to place that character, but we kind of started writing a story which was around when such an accusation, how it affects an entire relationship, what it does to the person because the entire film is centered around the accused person and their relationships and people around them," Kashyap explained. This focus on the ripple effects of the accusation became the central theme, guiding the development of the plot and characters.
Building the Narrative and Characters Organically
The director further elaborated on the creative process, stating, "So that was really the starting point and we started evaluating, evolving from there and then we built, you know, other characters and how it works and everything." She emphasized that the story emerged and grew organically around this central premise, allowing for a natural and authentic development of the narrative arc and the interpersonal dynamics depicted in the film.
'Accused' follows the compelling story of a woman, portrayed by Konkona Sen Sharma, who is alleged to have sexually harassed a victim, with Pratibha Ranta also starring in a lead role. The film intricately explores the psychological and emotional turmoil faced by the accused, particularly highlighting the strain on her queer partnership.
Conscious Creative Choices and Empathetic Approach
Earlier in the discussion, Anubhuti Kashyap had outlined the specific prerequisites she maintained while crafting the story. She told IANS, "The story, the subject was such that it always needed a certain lens, a certain empathetic approach towards it. It couldn't have been sensationalized, is what we felt." This conscious decision influenced the treatment of the script from the very beginning, ensuring a sensitive and nuanced portrayal.
Kashyap added, "We wanted to tell incidents in the story, events that make people uncomfortable in parts, not the queer relationship, but a lot of other things that were happening in the core of the story. So that was one of the guidelines." This approach aimed to provoke thought and discomfort regarding the central issues without resorting to sensationalism, maintaining integrity in the storytelling.
'Accused' is now available for streaming exclusively on Netflix, offering viewers a thought-provoking exploration of complex social and personal dynamics.
