Tragic Death of Food Influencer After Consuming Toxic Devil Crab

Social media platforms are currently flooded with videos from numerous influencers who sample a wide variety of culinary dishes. However, this trend took a horrifying turn when a food influencer reportedly died after eating a poisonous devil crab, as detailed in a report by the New York Post.

Who Was Emma Amit?

Emma Amit was a 51-year-old food vlogger hailing from Puerto Princesa, a picturesque coastal area located in Luzviminda village within Palawan. She was celebrated for her authentic, everyday videos that showcased local seafood adventures. Residing near the mangroves with her husband, both were experienced fisherfolk who possessed extensive knowledge of the sea's offerings, frequently gathering shellfish for both meals and content creation.

On February 4, 2026, she recorded herself and friends as they harvested crabs, snails, and other marine delicacies from a nearby mangrove forest. The group then proceeded to cook these finds in coconut milk for a social media clip.

The Fatal Bite

In the video, Emma took a bite of what was later identified as a toxic "devil crab," a brightly colored reef crustacean laden with lethal neurotoxins such as saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin. These poisons are also present in pufferfish and cannot be neutralized through cooking. Merely a day later, she became critically ill, experiencing severe convulsions. She was urgently transported to a clinic and then to a hospital, where her lips turned a dark blue while she was unconscious. Despite receiving medical treatment, Emma Amit passed away on February 6.

Investigation and Community Response

Laddy Gemang, the chief of Luzviminda village, visited her home following the incident and discovered the bright shells of the crab in her trash, prompting an official investigation. "This is really saddening because they should have known," Gemang stated, according to ABS-CBN as cited in People magazine. "They live by the sea, so I know they know about this devil crab that’s dangerous to eat. So why did she eat it? That is what I’m confused about."

Previous Incidents and Warnings

Despite their familiarity with the sea, Emma and her group overlooked the significant risks associated with the devil crab. Gemang emphasized that these crabs had previously caused fatalities in the local area. "To the residents of Puerto Princesa, I am urging you to be doubly vigilant," he added, per the New York Post report. "Do not eat these dangerous devil crabs because they have claimed two lives here in our town. Don’t gamble with your lives."

Authorities are currently monitoring her friends who shared the meal for any symptoms, as one individual has also reportedly died from the same cause. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in seemingly harmless culinary explorations.
