Apara Ekadashi 2026: Significance and Observance
Apara Ekadashi, also known as Achala Ekadashi, is a significant Hindu fasting day observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Jyeshtha month. In 2026, this auspicious day falls on May 13. Devotees observe a strict fast and perform special puja to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu. It is believed that observing Apara Ekadashi with devotion helps in attaining moksha and cleansing sins.
Apara Ekadashi Tithi and Timings
The Ekadashi tithi begins on May 12, 2026, at 06:15 PM and ends on May 13, 2026, at 04:45 PM. According to the Hindu calendar, the fast is observed on May 13, and the vrat parana (breaking of fast) should be done on May 14, 2026, during the appropriate time. The parana time is typically after sunrise on the next day, before the Dwadashi tithi ends. For 2026, the parana time is from 05:30 AM to 08:12 AM on May 14.
Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story)
The legend of Apara Ekadashi is narrated in the Brahmanda Purana. Once, King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the benefits of observing this Ekadashi. Lord Krishna recounted the story of a Brahmin named Sumedha who lived in the city of Kanyakubja. Sumedha was a virtuous man but was burdened by the sins of his past lives. He sought advice from Sage Angira, who recommended observing Apara Ekadashi to cleanse his sins. Sumedha followed the sage's advice, fasted with devotion, and was freed from all his sins. He eventually attained salvation and went to Vaikuntha. This story illustrates the immense power of Apara Ekadashi in absolving sins and granting liberation.
Apara Ekadashi Puja Vidhi (Rituals)
Devotees wake up early on Ekadashi day and take a holy bath. They clean the puja room and install an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu. The puja begins with lighting a lamp and offering incense, flowers, fruits, and sweets. Devotees chant Vishnu mantras like 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' and read the Apara Ekadashi vrat katha. Some observe a nirjala (without water) fast, while others consume fruits and milk. The fast is broken on Dwadashi after performing the parana ritual within the prescribed time.
Importance of Apara Ekadashi
Observing Apara Ekadashi is believed to be equivalent to visiting all pilgrimage sites. It helps in removing obstacles, fulfilling desires, and attaining spiritual growth. Devotees who cannot observe all Ekadashis are encouraged to observe this one for its exceptional benefits.
