State-Level Yoga Event in Mizoram Draws 300 Participants

Mizoram observed the International Day of Yoga on Sunday with a state-level programme held at the 34 Assam Rifles Helipad in Zokhawsang near Aizawl. The event, themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” saw participation from Governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh, state health & family welfare minister Lalrinpuii, and approximately 300 attendees, including personnel from Assam Rifles, Mizo Air Squadron NCC, and government officials.

Governor Emphasizes Yoga's Global Role and Accessibility

In his address, Governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh highlighted the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in bringing yoga to the forefront of global consciousness. “Yoga is not meant for sweat; rather, it is intended to bring harmony within the system,” he said. Singh noted that yoga does not require excessive time but demands adherence to proper protocol, involving smooth, synchronised movements coordinated with breathing. Each posture is designed to address specific health concerns. He further underlined yoga’s universal accessibility and affordability, stating it requires no special equipment and can be practised anywhere, making it suitable for people from all walks of life. The governor expressed appreciation to the National Ayush Mission, Directorate of Ayush, 34 Assam Rifles, Mizo Air Squadron NCC, and all participants for making the programme a success.

Minister Lalrinpuii Highlights Yoga's Role in Modern Life

State health & family welfare minister Lalrinpuii described the observance as Mizoram’s meaningful participation in the global movement for peace and well-being. She noted that yoga brings peace and balance even amid the busy pace of modern life. “Yoga is a simple exercise that everyone can practise. It welcomes all and has a place for everyone,” Lalrinpuii said.

Chief Secretary Reaffirms Government Commitment to Holistic Healthcare

State chief secretary Khilli Ram Meena, who also spoke at the event, said the Mizoram government is committed to advancing preventive and holistic healthcare through the Ayush system by integrating traditional knowledge with modern medical approaches for the benefit of the people. Col Laldinpuia, Commandant of 34 Assam Rifles, delivered the welcome address and thanked all attendees. The yoga session was led by the Yoga Crew of the National Ayush Mission, who guided participants through the prescribed Common Yoga Protocol with a variety of asanas aimed at physical and mental rejuvenation. The main national event at Red Road, Kolkata, West Bengal, was viewed live via virtual mode, during which attendees listened to the address by Prime Minister Modi.

Yoga Events Across Mizoram and at Meteorological Centre

In addition to the main event, the day was observed at various locations across Mizoram, including district hospitals, health & wellness centres, educational institutions, and local organisations. The Meteorological Centre (MC), Aizawl, also celebrated the day with active participation from its officers and staff members. The programme was organised in compliance with central directions to promote yoga for physical fitness, mental well-being, and a healthy lifestyle. The celebration began with a brief address highlighting yoga’s significance and its role in fostering harmony between mind and body. Speaking on the occasion, the director of the Meteorological Centre, Aizawl, Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, reiterated the theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga and encouraged employees to adopt yoga as a regular practice. The programme concluded with a collective pledge to continue promoting wellness, discipline, and healthy living through regular yoga practice.

Mizoram University Marks the Day with Yoga Session

Mizoram University also marked the day on campus. The event was organised by the Yoga Centre under the Department of Hindi, bringing together students, teachers, and staff for a morning of yoga and unity, opened with a live telecast of the Prime Minister’s address. The university’s participation underscored the widespread embrace of yoga across educational institutions in the state.
