CM Rekha Gupta Flags Off 13 Mobile Heat Relief Units

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday flagged off 13 mobile heat relief units aimed at providing immediate assistance to residents during the scorching summer months. The units, equipped with drinking water, oral rehydration solutions, and basic medical facilities, will operate across various hotspots in the national capital.

Initiative to Combat Heatwave

The mobile vans are part of the Delhi government's broader strategy to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, especially in vulnerable areas. Each unit will be stationed at key locations such as bus stands, markets, and construction sites where workers and commuters are most exposed.

Key Features of the Units

  • Each van carries 500 litres of chilled drinking water.
  • First-aid kits and paramedic staff are available on board.
  • Oral rehydration salts and electrolyte drinks are stocked.
  • Shaded seating areas are provided for immediate relief.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, CM Gupta emphasized the urgency of the initiative given the rising temperatures. 'We are committed to ensuring no life is lost due to heatstroke. These mobile units will reach the most affected areas promptly,' she said.

Deployment Plan

The vans will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily during peak heat hours. Routes are planned based on historical data of heat-related incidents and population density. The government plans to monitor the effectiveness of the units and may expand the fleet if needed.

Residents can locate the nearest unit through a dedicated helpline and the Delhi government's app. The initiative has been welcomed by civic groups, though some have called for more permanent solutions like shaded bus stops and water coolers.

This is the first time the Delhi government has deployed mobile heat relief units on such a scale. The move comes after a heatwave warning from the India Meteorological Department for the coming weeks, with temperatures expected to touch 45 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city.
