Goa Cabinet Approves Separate Ayush Department

Goa Cabinet Greenlights Formation of Dedicated Ayush Department

The state cabinet of Goa, in a significant move on Friday, granted formal approval for the establishment of a separate Department of Ayush. This decision marks a pivotal step in the administrative restructuring of traditional medicine systems within the state.

Background: From Cell to Department

Currently, Ayush-related programs and initiatives in Goa are managed under the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) through a specialized Ayush cell. This cell is headed by the Deputy Director (Ayush), who oversees the implementation of various traditional medicine services.

The move to create an independent department aligns with the national framework established by the Government of India, which formed a separate Ministry of Ayush in November 2014. This ministry was specifically created to promote and develop traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy.

Expansion of Ayush Infrastructure in Goa

Over the past several years, Ayush infrastructure and services in Goa have seen substantial growth and development. The state has integrated traditional medicine into its public health system through various facilities.

Key operational points include:

  • Ayurvedic and homoeopathic dispensaries are now functioning across a network of healthcare institutions, including Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), Urban Health Centres (UHCs), Sub-District Hospitals (SDHs), and District Hospitals.
  • Ayush physicians conduct regular Outpatient Departments (OPDs), providing patients with essential medicines, therapeutic procedures, and personalized lifestyle advice.
  • Eight dedicated Ayush Wellness Centres are currently operational in the state. These centres offer specialized services such as yoga demonstrations and Panchakarma therapies, including procedures like janu basti, kati basti, rakta mokshan, and agni karma.

Implications of the Cabinet Decision

The approval for a separate Ayush department is expected to enhance the focus and resources allocated to traditional medicine systems in Goa. By moving from a cell under the DHS to an independent department, the state aims to streamline operations, improve service delivery, and further integrate Ayurveda, Yoga, and other traditional practices into the mainstream healthcare framework.

This administrative shift reflects Goa's commitment to supporting holistic health approaches and aligning with national efforts to preserve and promote India's rich heritage of traditional medicine.
