In a significant move towards inclusivity, Haryana Roadways has announced free bus travel for persons with disabilities (Divyang) who have a disability ranging from 40 to 99 percent. The decision, effective immediately, aims to ease mobility challenges and promote equal access to public transport for all citizens.
Key Details of the Scheme
Under the new policy, Divyang individuals with a certified disability of 40 percent or more can travel free of cost on all Haryana Roadways buses, including ordinary, semi-deluxe, and deluxe services. The benefit extends to both intra-state and inter-state routes operated by the corporation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a resident of Haryana.
- Possess a valid disability certificate issued by a competent medical authority.
- Disability percentage should be between 40% and 99%.
How to Avail the Benefit
Eligible individuals need to show their disability certificate while boarding the bus. The conductor will issue a zero-fare ticket. No prior registration is required, making the process hassle-free.
Government's Vision
Haryana Transport Minister stated, "This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering Divyang individuals and ensuring their seamless integration into society. Free bus travel will reduce their financial burden and enhance their independence."
The scheme is part of the state government's broader agenda to improve accessibility and create an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities. Similar initiatives have been implemented in other states, but Haryana's move to cover a wide range of disability percentages sets a progressive example.
Impact on Commuters
Divyang commuters have welcomed the decision. Rajesh Kumar, a visually impaired resident of Karnal, said, "This is a great relief. I travel frequently for work, and the free bus pass will save me considerable money." Another beneficiary, Sunita Devi from Hisar, added, "It gives me a sense of dignity to travel without worrying about fare."
Implementation and Monitoring
Haryana Roadways has issued instructions to all depot managers to ensure strict compliance. Random checks will be conducted to prevent misuse. The corporation also plans to launch an awareness campaign to inform eligible individuals about the scheme.
This policy aligns with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which mandates accessible transport. With this step, Haryana moves closer to achieving its goal of a barrier-free environment for all.
