School Launches Mushroom Cultivation Project
Students at Government Senior Secondary School, Kahlog, in Kandaghat are gaining hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation through a unique eco-club initiative. The project, named 'Mission White Umbrella', was launched in April under the school's Monal Eco Club, with the first batch of oyster mushrooms successfully cultivated on campus.
The initiative was spearheaded by Biology Lecturer Hitaishi, who learned mushroom cultivation techniques during a day-long practical training programme organized by an NGO. She procured mushroom spawn and cultivation bags from the Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan, and invested her own resources to obtain the necessary raw materials.
Overcoming Initial Setbacks
The first attempt faced challenges due to unfavorable climatic conditions, but Hitaishi persevered with a carefully planned second trial that yielded encouraging results. After the first crop took about a month to fructify, two more batches have since been cultivated on the school premises.
Students and teachers worked collectively to ensure the venture's success. Hitaishi provided students with practical knowledge of mushroom cultivation techniques while educating them about the nutritional and health benefits of mushrooms. "Being a rich source of protein, vitamins and other nutrients, mushrooms are highly beneficial for the physical and mental development of children," she said.
Nutritional Impact on Mid-Day Meals
The bumper harvest has enabled the school to include mushrooms in students' mid-day meals, providing a nutritious addition to their diet. School Principal Radha Kashyap said the initiative was designed to offer hands-on learning opportunities while promoting awareness about nutrition. "The objective of this project is to provide practical experience to students in mushroom cultivation while also sensitising them to the importance of nutritious food," she said.
Students have gained valuable exposure to agriculture, entrepreneurship, and self-employment opportunities through this hands-on training beyond the classroom. The school community has resolved to continue similar innovative activities in the future and ensure the sustained success of 'Mission White Umbrella'.
