Varanasi witnessed a grand yoga and public outreach programme at Ravidas Ghat on Wednesday as part of the 'Gangotri to Gangasagar' Yoga Yatra, organized by the Ministry of Ayush in the run-up to International Yoga Day 2026.
Nationwide Awareness Campaign
The nationwide campaign aims to promote yoga, health, environmental conservation, and Indian cultural values by connecting major cities along the Ganga. The yatra commenced at Gangotri on June 13 and will traverse key locations including Rishikesh, Haridwar, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna, and Hooghly, culminating at Gangasagar on June 20.
Varanasi: A Major Stop
Varanasi served as a significant stop, drawing large participation from yoga practitioners, students, social workers, representatives of voluntary organizations, and local residents.
Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Dayashankar Mishra 'Dayalu', and Director General of the Ministry of Ayush, Dr. Chitra B G, attended the event. They described yoga as the foundation of a healthy, balanced, and active lifestyle, urging citizens to incorporate it into their daily routines. Referring to the International Yoga Day 2026 theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', they highlighted yoga's role in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, stress management, and healthy aging.
Prof. Rajaram Shukla, head of the faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan at BHU, welcomed all guests. On this occasion, Sanjay Singh 'Bablu', President of the Indian Wrestling Federation, honored yoga instructors and appreciated their contributions.
Program Activities
During the program, collective yoga practice, public awareness activities, and dialogue sessions were organized. Participants also pledged to join the International Yoga Day programs scheduled for June 21 in greater numbers.
