Tragic Holi Celebrations Turn Deadly in Odisha with Fatal Road Accidents
In a devastating turn of events during the Holi festival, five individuals, including a three-year-old boy, lost their lives while three others sustained serious injuries in two separate road accidents that occurred in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts of Odisha on Wednesday afternoon. Head-On Collision Claims Four Lives in Kandhamal District
The first and more severe accident took place at Kundli chhaka under the jurisdiction of Gochhapada police station in Kandhamal district. According to police reports, four persons died and a woman was seriously injured when two motorcycles collided head-on. The victims were identified as Babula Kanhar (28), Baman Kanhar (37), Kartika Kanhar (3) of Patilipadia village, and Tulu Digal (30) of Takiriguda.
Police investigation revealed that after celebrating Holi, Babula, Baman, and Binita Kanhar along with her three-year-old child were traveling toward a nearby village on a motorcycle. Their vehicle collided with another motorcycle ridden by Tulu Digal. The impact was so severe that three individuals died at the scene, while Tulu Digal succumbed to his injuries at Gochhapada hospital.
Separate Accident in Ganjam District Claims One Life
In a simultaneous but unrelated incident at Digapahandi in Ganjam district, a 28-year-old man died and two others were injured after a motorcycle collided with a two-wheeler. The deceased was identified as Siba Gouda of Satapentha Gopalpur near Digapahandi.
Eyewitness accounts and police statements indicate that Siba Gouda was traveling toward Digapahandi on a scooty when he collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. Local residents immediately rushed Siba to Digapahandi hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The two other injured persons were referred to a medical college and hospital after their condition deteriorated.
Aftermath and Medical Response
The bodies of all five deceased were handed over to their family members on Thursday following completion of autopsy procedures, as confirmed by police authorities. Binita Kanhar, mother of the deceased three-year-old boy, was among the seriously injured persons and is currently undergoing treatment along with other survivors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Medical officials report that all injured individuals are receiving comprehensive care, though their conditions remain serious. The tragic incidents have prompted local authorities to review road safety measures during festive periods when traffic volumes typically increase significantly.
