Rajya Sabha MP Seechewal has raised serious concerns over the contamination of canal water in Abohar, Punjab, stating that approximately 80 tons of cow dung are being discharged into the water body daily. This pollution poses a significant threat to both the environment and public health, as the canal serves as a vital water source for irrigation and drinking purposes in the region.

The MP pointed out that the primary source of this contamination is the improper disposal of cow dung from nearby dairies and cattle sheds. Without proper waste management systems, the dung flows directly into the canal, leading to severe water quality degradation. The situation has been ongoing for months, with no effective intervention from local authorities.
Impact on Water Quality
The accumulation of cow dung introduces high levels of organic matter, pathogens, and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus into the water. This not only makes the water unsafe for drinking but also promotes algal blooms, which deplete oxygen levels and harm aquatic life. Farmers using this water for irrigation risk crop damage and soil contamination.
Call for Immediate Action
Seechewal has urged the state government and the Punjab Pollution Control Board to take immediate steps to curb the pollution. He recommended setting up biogas plants or composting units to manage cow dung effectively, thereby preventing it from entering water bodies. The MP also emphasized the need for regular monitoring and strict enforcement of environmental laws.
Local residents have expressed their distress over the deteriorating water quality, reporting foul odors and increased cases of waterborne diseases. Community leaders are demanding swift action to restore the canal's health and ensure safe water access.
