Visakhapatnam: Cities and villages across Andhra Pradesh are exhibiting alarming levels of mental stress and socio-economic distress, with more than 22 individuals dying by suicide every day in the state during 2024. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on Accidental Deaths and Suicides, family-related issues emerged as the leading cause, followed by illness. Although the overall number of suicides in 2024 declined by 4.4% compared to 2023, the state's suicide rate of 15.5 remains significantly higher than the national average of 12.3.
Key Statistics and Demographics
Of the 8,302 suicides reported in Andhra Pradesh in 2024, 6,462 (78%) were men. A cause-wise analysis revealed that family-related issues accounted for 2,267 deaths (27%), followed by illness with 2,049 cases (24%). Bankruptcy or indebtedness led to 983 deaths, while drug and alcohol abuse contributed to 617 cases. Love affairs were linked to 217 deaths and marital problems to 203.
Occupational Profile of Victims
The occupational breakdown of victims underscores widespread socio-economic pressures. Daily wage workers formed the largest group with 3,208 deaths, followed by 981 self-employed individuals, 780 from the farming sector, 756 housewives, 560 salaried professionals, and 508 students. The data suggests emotional stress and academic pressure as key contributing factors.
Expert Insights
Psychiatrists noted that family disputes often lead to a sense of helplessness, with individuals finding it difficult to resolve conflicts. As depression deepens, some may resort to extreme steps, including suicide. Experts also pointed out that men are less likely to express emotions or seek help while facing financial strain and family responsibilities, which increases their vulnerability to ending their life.
Lack of Preventive Measures
Despite recording over 8,000 suicides annually, Andhra Pradesh lacks adequate suicide prevention helplines and dedicated counselling centres. Social activists highlighted that educational institutions have also failed to appoint counsellors in schools and colleges to address students' mental health issues and prevent suicides.
