Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme Reaches Major Milestone with 43.5 Crore Health Cards Issued
The Indian government announced on Tuesday that its flagship health insurance initiative, the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), has achieved a significant milestone by issuing more than 43.5 crore health cards across the nation. This comprehensive coverage includes a notable 1.14 crore health cards specifically for senior citizens aged 70 and above, ensuring that vulnerable elderly populations have access to essential healthcare services.
Extensive Hospital Network and Treatment Authorizations
Under the AB-PMJAY scheme, which provides an annual health cover of ₹5 lakh per family for hospitalization, the government has empanelled over 36,000 hospitals nationwide. These facilities offer cashless treatment for nearly 2,000 medical procedures spanning 27 different specialties, making quality healthcare accessible to millions of beneficiaries.
Since the scheme's inception, authorities have authorized over 11.6 crore hospital admissions, with the total value of these treatments reaching an impressive ₹1.73 lakh crore. This demonstrates the substantial financial protection and healthcare access the program provides to families across India, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Digital Health Infrastructure Expansion Through ABDM
Parallel to the insurance scheme, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has made remarkable progress in creating a nationwide digital health ecosystem. The mission has successfully generated more than 86 crore health IDs for citizens, with over 90 crore health records now linked digitally to these identifiers.
The digital transformation extends to healthcare facilities as well, with more than 2.5 lakh health institutions currently utilizing ABDM-enabled software systems. This widespread adoption indicates a rapid acceleration toward a fully integrated digital health infrastructure that can streamline medical services, improve patient care coordination, and enhance overall healthcare delivery efficiency across the country.
Comprehensive Impact on India's Healthcare Landscape
The combined achievements of AB-PMJAY and ABDM represent a transformative shift in India's healthcare framework. By providing substantial financial coverage through insurance and establishing a robust digital backbone for health records, the government aims to create a more inclusive, accessible, and efficient healthcare system.
These initiatives are particularly crucial for senior citizens and low-income families, who often face significant barriers to obtaining adequate medical care. The issuance of millions of health cards and the authorization of crores of hospital admissions underscore the scheme's tangible impact on improving health outcomes and reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses for countless Indian households.
