The semi-mountainous city of Belagavi is reeling under intense summer heat as temperatures have crossed 39 degrees Celsius, leaving residents exhausted. Apart from the morning and evening hours, traffic movement has thinned considerably. Sales at soft drink shops have surged, while the use of fans and air conditioners in homes and offices has increased sharply, leading to a surge in the city's electricity consumption. Roads here bear an empty look from early afternoon itself.
Temperature Trends and Forecast
In Belagavi, May temperatures usually range between 36°C and 39°C. This year, however, the mercury crossed 39°C as early as April. If the trend continues, residents fear a harsher May, with forecasts warning that temperatures could climb to 44°C. Pradeep, a vegetable vendor, said street vendors were facing the brunt of such extreme weather conditions. T S Chaugala, a Kirana merchant, said due to the scorching heat, traders were not able to keep their shops open in the afternoon, leading to decline in business. Traffic police said people were finding it difficult to commute after 10 am.
Meteorological Factors
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a few days ago, humidity was 75%. That has now increased to about 85%. Wind speed was about 14 kmph, but now it has declined to 4 kmph, making the heat all the more intolerable. R H Patil, a meteorologist, said drop in wind speed and increased humidity have increased the discomfort even more. The temperature is likely to increase further by May.
Health Issues and Precautions
Dr Ishwar Gadadi, the district health officer, said dehydration is a common problem. There is a possibility of an increase in cases of vomiting, diarrhoea and intestinal cramps. There is also a risk of heat stroke. He advised drinking of fresh buttermilk and fruit juice. Health officials have warned that there is a risk of heatstroke if the humidity increases further. The health department has advised people not to venture out in the afternoon hours, consume more water and stay hydrated at all times.
