Bengaluru Households Rethink Budgets as LPG Price Hits Rs 944.5
Bengaluru LPG Price Hike: Households Rethink Budgets

Bengaluru: The latest increase in domestic LPG prices has left many Bengaluru households reworking their monthly budgets, with consumers saying the impact goes far beyond the Rs 29 rise announced this week. The revision takes the price of a 14.2kg domestic LPG cylinder in Bengaluru to Rs 944.5, slightly higher than Delhi's Rs 942. This increase comes barely three months after a Rs 60 hike in March, meaning consumers are now paying nearly Rs 90 more per cylinder than they were at the beginning of the year.

Cumulative Effect on Households

For many residents, the concern is not the latest increase alone, but the cumulative effect of rising cooking and food costs. Several people living in shared accommodations and rented homes said they have started changing their cooking habits to make the gas last longer. While giving up LPG entirely is not an option, many said they are increasingly relying on induction stoves, electric kettles, and air fryers for smaller cooking tasks. Others said they have begun preparing more salads and simple meals that require less cooking time.

The challenge, they say, is that eating out is not a cheaper alternative. The recent increases in commercial LPG prices have pushed up costs for eateries, forcing many establishments to revise menu prices. As a result, consumers find themselves caught between higher cooking costs at home and more expensive meals outside.

Voices from the City

Shyamala James, a city resident, said, "Being part of a middle-class family, the increase in LPG prices may appear modest, but it adds to the growing pressure on household budgets. Every rupee counts when families are already dealing with rising costs of groceries, education, healthcare, and other essentials. Such increases directly affect monthly financial planning and make it more difficult for households to balance their expenses."

Ripple Effects on Businesses

The ripple effects are felt across small businesses as well. K Ravi, a chartered accountant, said that while the government has attempted to shield domestic consumers from the full impact of rising global LPG prices, businesses have borne a much larger burden. According to him, rising fuel costs eventually are passed on to consumers through higher prices, while many small businesses struggle to absorb the additional expenditure. He also called for greater support for alternatives such as piped natural gas (PNG) to reduce dependence on LPG.

Restaurant owner Abul Hassan said the situation has become increasingly difficult for small establishments. "The impact is being felt both at home and in business. We have already been forced to increase menu prices because of higher fuel costs. When restaurants pay more for cooking fuel, consumers inevitably pay more for food. Now, with domestic LPG prices also increasing, households are facing a double burden," he said. Abul added that many small businesses are witnessing declining customer footfall as people cut discretionary spending. "Cooking at home is becoming costlier, but eating out is also no longer affordable. Ultimately, consumers and small businesses are both paying the price," he said.

Expert Insights

Pratima Manohar, an urbanist, said the latest hike highlights how global conflicts eventually affect local households. "The LPG hike may have been inevitable given rising international fuel prices, but its impact will be felt across households and businesses alike. Lower-income families are likely to be affected the most, while sectors such as hospitality and construction will also see costs increase. Energy prices tend to ripple through the entire economy," she said. The situation also underscores India's dependence on imported fuel and the need to invest in more resilient and sustainable alternatives in the long term, she added.

While the government has attributed the latest revision to a sharp rise in international LPG prices amid disruptions in West Asia, consumers in Bengaluru say their immediate concern is much simpler: finding ways to keep household expenses under control.
