Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed in Bilaspur District, Containment Measures Intensified
The district administration in Bilaspur has escalated its emergency response following laboratory confirmation of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, at a government-operated poultry facility. This development comes after a significant mortality event among the farm's chicken population.
Significant Poultry Losses and Immediate Actions
District Collector Sanjay Agrawal reported that approximately 5,500 chickens have perished due to the infection over a five-day period at the government poultry farm located in Koni. The farm, situated roughly 125 kilometers from the state capital of Raipur, has been immediately shut down as a critical precautionary step.
Samples from the deceased birds were dispatched to a testing facility in Bhopal, where analyses confirmed the presence of the bird flu virus. In response, authorities have declared a five-kilometer radius around the epicenter as a sensitive containment zone. To mitigate further risk, the carcasses of the infected poultry, along with an estimated 20,000 eggs, have been systematically destroyed.
High-Level Inspection and Coordinated Strategy
Late on Tuesday night, District Collector Agrawal, accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajnesh Singh, conducted an on-site inspection of the affected area in Koni to assess and reinforce containment protocols. "We are rigorously adhering to the standard operating procedures and are collaborating closely with the veterinary department to control the outbreak and prevent any potential spread of the virus," stated the Collector during the review.
The administration has mobilized a multi-departmental task force involving personnel from health services, animal husbandry, and the municipal corporation. Collector Agrawal emphasized that preventing the spread of infection is the paramount priority and called for seamless coordination among all involved agencies.
Comprehensive Containment and Public Safety Measures
The district administration has implemented a series of stringent measures to manage the crisis effectively:
- Movement Regulation: Strict controls have been imposed on entry and exit within the designated containment zone to limit exposure.
- Scientific Protocols: Officials are mandated to execute sampling, culling of potentially infected birds, and disposal activities following established scientific guidelines.
- Health Surveillance: Health check-ups are being conducted for residents in the vicinity, with provisions for immediate medical treatment for anyone exhibiting suspicious symptoms.
- Farm Monitoring: Constant surveillance of all poultry farms in the region is underway, coupled with restrictions on the transportation of birds to curb transmission.
- Sanitization Drive: The Bilaspur Municipal Corporation has been directed to ensure thorough sanitization, cleanliness, and scientific management of waste in the affected area.
- Security and Communication: SSP Singh has instructed police to enhance security at the containment zone to prevent unauthorized access. He also stressed the importance of combating misinformation by disseminating accurate updates to the public.
The administration has issued a public appeal, urging citizens to adhere to official health advisories and to report any instances of unusual bird deaths to the authorities without delay. This coordinated effort aims to swiftly contain the outbreak and safeguard both animal and public health in the region.
