A 26-year-old home guard allegedly jumped into the Garga river after running out of a counselling session at the Women’s police station in Sector-I, Bokaro, on Sunday. Police, with the help of locals, rescued him.
Incident Details
Badal Mahli, a resident of Telo, and his 23-year-old wife were called to the police station for counselling over an ongoing marital dispute. The couple married five months ago, but the dispute began a month after the wedding. The woman’s elder sister lodged a complaint alleging that Mahli used to beat his wife.
Escalation During Counselling
Police said the counselling session turned tense after the couple got into a heated argument. Women’s police station officer in-charge Meera Lakra said personnel were trying to calm them when Mahli suddenly became agitated.
“He said he was going to die by suicide and ran out of the police station. We immediately followed him, but he reached the Garga banks, about 1.5 km away, and jumped into the water,” Lakra said.
Rescue Operation
Lakra, along with City police station OC Sudama Das and other personnel, rushed to the spot. A rescue operation was launched with support from locals, and Mahli was pulled out. He was shifted to Bokaro Sadar Hospital, where doctors said his condition was stable.
Mahli’s father, Raju Mahto, said his son was facing marital discord for the last four months. “He was upset and kept saying that his wife did not understand him. After leaving the counselling session, he went to the river and jumped,” Mahto said.
Wife's Stance
Lakra said Mahli’s wife wanted to live with him but urged police to counsel him not to beat her.
