BITS Pilani has rolled out a comprehensive set of student welfare measures aimed at addressing the mental health crisis at the institute, which has witnessed a series of student suicides in recent years. The initiatives include incorporating yoga into the curriculum, strengthening sports programmes, extending gymnasium hours, and providing round-the-clock counselling support.
Measures Presented to Monitoring Committee
The measures were presented by BITS Pilani Director Suman Kundu at a meeting of the district level monitoring committee (DLMC) on mental health and prevention of suicide in higher education institutions. The meeting was chaired by South Goa District Magistrate Egna Cleetus. Besides yoga and sports, the institute has been conducting health camps and motivational sessions for students. Counselling support is available 24/7 through Tele-MANAS and the Myndwell platform, ensuring students have access to professional mental health assistance at any hour.
Background of Student Suicides
The measures come against the backdrop of a series of student suicides at the Goa campus over the past several years, which had drawn widespread concern. The institute has faced intense scrutiny and pressure to improve mental health support systems.
Stakeholder Coordination and Monitoring
Chairing the meeting, Cleetus directed all stakeholders to ensure close coordination and sustained monitoring of the initiatives. The focus is on strengthening mental health support systems and promoting overall student well-being. Director of Higher Education Bhushan Savaikar was also present, along with officials from the departments of health, social welfare, law, tribal welfare, technical education, and the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB).
The comprehensive approach includes not only remedial measures but also proactive steps to create a healthier campus environment. The institute aims to integrate mental wellness into daily student life through yoga and sports, while also providing robust support mechanisms for those in distress.
