Etah: A wedding in Nagla Phule village in Etah district was abruptly called off on Sunday night after the bride refused to marry the groom, alleging his family had concealed a serious spinal disorder. The baraat (wedding procession) was forced to return to Katholi village without the bride following a heated standoff between the two families.
Incident Details
The ceremony, held at a guest house in Sakit town, was proceeding normally until the "Darwaza" ritual. According to witnesses, the groom, 25-year-old Karan Singh, lost his balance and fell while attempting to sit on a wooden platform. Suspicion grew among the bride's relatives when Singh repeatedly struggled to sit upright. While the family had noticed similar difficulties during earlier rituals, they initially dismissed them.
Family Reactions
The bride's family expressed outrage, claiming they had been deceived. "They hid his medical condition from us. We would never have agreed to the match if we had known," said a relative. The groom's family denied the allegations, stating that Singh's condition was minor and had been disclosed. However, the bride remained firm in her decision, leading to the cancellation.
Aftermath
Village elders intervened but failed to resolve the dispute. The groom's family left the venue amidst tension. Local authorities were not involved, as both families decided to settle the matter privately. The incident has sparked discussions about pre-marital health disclosures in rural areas.
This event highlights the importance of transparency in arranged marriages, particularly regarding health issues. It also underscores the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in matrimonial alliances.
