Bride Dies After Turmeric Paste at Haldi Ceremony

A 21-year-old woman named Rakhi tragically lost her life after a severe allergic reaction to turmeric paste applied during her pre-wedding haldi ceremony in Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred on April 22, just four days before her scheduled wedding.

What Happened During the Haldi Ceremony

During the ritual at her home near Kasrawad bus stand, turmeric mixed with chiksa (a fragrant substance) was applied to Rakhi. Within hours, her throat began to swell, her lips puffed up, and red rashes covered her body. She was the only one among approximately 15 attendees to fall ill.

Medical Response and Allegations

Her father, Gaju Nath, rushed her to the district hospital that night, where she was admitted to the ICU. The next morning, doctors referred her to MY Hospital in Indore, reportedly due to a lack of equipment to examine her throat. Tests including X-ray and ECG were conducted, but her condition worsened.

The family then moved her to a private hospital in Indore's Gumasta Nagar area. According to Gaju Nath, hospital staff told them treatment would be expensive and advised them to return to MY Hospital because they were poor. While being taken back, Rakhi died en route.

Funeral Instead of Wedding

The day meant for the mandap ceremony became Rakhi's funeral. Decorative torans still hang at the entrance of their home. No postmortem was conducted before the last rites.

Police and Health Department Response

Kasrawad police station in-charge Rajendra Burman stated no information about the incident had been received. However, Khargone chief medical and health officer Dr. Daulat Singh Chauhan confirmed a probe has been ordered. A team led by the Kasrawad block medical officer will investigate. Health department officials visited the family's residence.

Food Safety Inspection Ordered

Khargone collector Bhavya Mittal directed food safety officials to launch a special inspection drive across the district and collect turmeric and other spice samples for laboratory testing. Chief food safety officer HL Awasya said samples were also collected from shops in and around Kasrawad after the incident came to light.

The family alleges negligence, and the investigation is ongoing.
