Tragic Electrocution Claims Lives of Elderly Couple in Sundargarh Village
A devastating incident unfolded in Bhedargahal village under the Sadar police limits of Sundargarh district on Monday afternoon, resulting in the tragic deaths of an elderly couple due to electrocution. The victims, identified as Anant Kainsaria (60), a mason, and his wife Sumitra Kainsaria (58), a labourer, were residents of Chhotabanga under Lephripada police station.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The couple was engaged in installing a grill on the roof of a house, utilizing a ladder for access. While performing their work, they inadvertently came into contact with a live service electric wire located in the staircase room of the property. This contact caused immediate electrocution, leading to their collapse.
Witnessing the distressing scene, Bas Kamar (50), a local woman and fellow labourer, rushed to provide assistance. In a heartbreaking turn of events, she also sustained serious injuries after touching the same live wire during her rescue attempt.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
All three individuals were promptly rescued and transported to the Government Medical College and Hospital for urgent medical attention. Upon arrival, doctors declared Anant and Sumitra Kainsaria dead on arrival. Bas Kamar was admitted to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and is currently under medical care.
The Sadar police swiftly responded to the incident, conducting inquiries both at the accident site and the hospital. The bodies of the deceased couple were placed in the morgue, and their family members were notified of the tragedy. The couple is survived by four sons and two daughters.
Police Investigation and Statements
Authorities have registered an unnatural death case and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the electrocution. Sasmita Debta, Inspector-in-Charge of the Sadar police station, stated, "After registering an unnatural death case, we are investigating the matter." The postmortem examinations were conducted on Tuesday, following which the bodies were handed over to the family for last rites.
This incident highlights critical safety concerns regarding electrical hazards in residential and construction settings, prompting calls for increased awareness and preventive measures in rural and urban areas alike.
