Chennai: A growing number of spotted deer in the Perungalathur reserve forest along the Vandalur–Nedunkundram road are foraging on waste strewn by commuters, raising serious health concerns among officials and residents. The free-ranging deer feed on refuse, including plastics and organic material, that is routinely discarded into the forest by passing motorists. Wildlife officials have warned that ingestion of such waste can lead to intestinal blockages and long-term health damage, posing a significant threat to the animal population.
Persistent Littering Problem
Despite repeated warnings and appeals, the littering has continued unabated. This situation mirrors a crisis that occurred at Nanmangalam forest several years ago, where similar dumping led to severe environmental and health issues. A senior wildlife official noted that the spotted deer population in the Perungalathur area has increased considerably over the years, necessitating rehabilitation efforts. Over a decade ago, stray deer roaming in residential neighbourhoods were safely captured and relocated to Guindy National Park. A similar intervention at Perungalathur could help reduce the free-ranging deer population and mitigate the risks associated with garbage ingestion.
Call for Action
Officials have urged the forest department to formally approach the Tambaram corporation to address the waste management issue. A local resident, A Arumugam from Vandalur, emphasized the urgency: "Waste must be removed regularly to ensure that the Perungalathur Reserve Forest and its animal inhabitants are no longer vulnerable to the hazards of indiscriminate dumping." The forest department is now considering steps to clean up the area and prevent further harm to wildlife.
