In a candid conversation with The Tribune, Dr. Paramjit Mann, a prominent healthcare expert, shed light on the pressing issues plaguing the healthcare system in Punjab. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul to address the gaps in infrastructure, manpower, and accessibility.
Infrastructure Deficits
Dr. Mann pointed out that many government hospitals in Punjab lack basic amenities. 'We have seen that even in district hospitals, there is a shortage of essential equipment and medicines. This forces patients to seek private care, which is often unaffordable,' he said.
Manpower Shortage
The doctor highlighted the acute shortage of medical professionals, especially in rural areas. 'There is a severe lack of doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff. The patient-to-doctor ratio is alarming,' he noted. He suggested incentivizing postings in remote areas to attract talent.
Way Forward
Dr. Mann advocated for a multi-pronged approach, including better funding, regular audits, and community participation. 'We need to involve local bodies in healthcare management. Also, telemedicine can bridge the gap in far-flung areas,' he added.
He also stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and awareness campaigns. 'Prevention is better than cure. We must focus on lifestyle diseases and promote regular check-ups,' Dr. Mann concluded.
