Firecracker Factory Accidents in Andhra Pradesh: A Recurring Tragedy
Accidents at firecracker manufacturing units have become a disturbingly common occurrence in Andhra Pradesh over the years. Despite claims from officials about conducting periodic inspections, incidents like the recent one at Vetlapalem village continue to happen with alarming frequency, highlighting systemic failures in safety enforcement.
The High Risks of Firecracker Production
The production of high-decibel crackers, including bombs and sky-shots, involves significant dangers. Both illegal and licensed units frequently make headlines for deadly accidents that result in severe loss of life and property. Experts consistently point to missing safety measures and the employment of unskilled workers as primary causes behind these tragedies.
In the past eight years alone, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed approximately 30 such accidents, leading to the deaths of more than 90 individuals. A notable example occurred just five months ago at Sri Ganapathi Fire Works, a firecracker manufacturing and sales unit in V Savaram village, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district. That explosion in October last year claimed eight lives, including three women, with reports indicating that a short circuit in the electrical wiring near explosive materials triggered the disaster.
Safety Violations and Negligence
Police and fire service personnel note that licensed units are permitted to store only a limited amount of explosives and employ a small number of workers per shift. However, it is common practice for these units to stockpile raw explosive materials well beyond legal limits. Additionally, the use of unskilled labor and negligence in handling these dangerous substances frequently leads to catastrophic accidents.
Owners of both illegal and licensed fireworks units often hire unskilled workers, many of whom are women, and pay them low wages. These untrained individuals, lacking proper safety training, are prone to causing major accidents, as confirmed by officials. This pattern of exploitation and disregard for regulations perpetuates the cycle of deadly incidents.
The recurring nature of these accidents underscores an urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and better oversight to prevent future tragedies in the firecracker industry of Andhra Pradesh.
