Goa Waste Crisis: Youth Suicide Highlights Garbage Failure

Calangute: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Saturday stated that the death of a young man in Mapusa, which is connected to a garbage dumping incident, underscores the severe waste management crisis in Goa. Lobo pointed out that with no waste collection mechanism in the surrounding villages, people bring garbage bags when they come to Mapusa for work or to drop their children off at school. He remarked, 'Anywhere you go in Mapusa, you see garbage.'

Tragic Incident Unfolds

On Friday, 23-year-old Samuel de Braganca allegedly shot himself dead hours after a purported video of him dumping waste went viral. An offense was registered against him at Mapusa police station for allegedly dumping waste. Lobo described the incident as unfortunate and noted that while some people make videos to show concern for the environment, the youth should have corrected his behavior rather than taking his own life.

Call for Collective Action

Lobo emphasized that the state is falling behind in garbage collection and management. He called for the government, like-minded citizens, and NGOs to work together to address the issue. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the need for effective waste management solutions in Goa.
