Gujarat Government Revises Essential Drugs List for 2025-26
In a significant move to enhance healthcare accessibility, the Gujarat government announced on Thursday the revision of its essential drugs list (EDL) for the fiscal year 2025-26. The state has added 150 crucial medicines and surgical items while removing 57 from the previous list. This annual update ensures that all listed items are provided free of charge across healthcare facilities, ranging from primary health centres in rural and urban areas to hospitals affiliated with medical colleges.
Substantial Expansion in Drug Availability
Health Minister Praful Pansheriya highlighted the substantial expansion, stating that after a thorough review of 1,386 drugs from the 2024-25 list, the Gujarat Medical Services Corporation Ltd (GMSCL) made these adjustments. As a result, the new list comprises 1,479 essential surgical and diagnostic drugs, making them easily available to patients throughout the coming year.
The minister provided a detailed breakdown, noting that the state's list now includes 378 primary, 628 secondary, and 1,475 tertiary drugs. He emphasized a significant increase in life-saving medications compared to the previous year, with anti-infective medicines rising from 202 to 216, respiratory medicines from 29 to 40, eye medicines from 51 to 58, gastrointestinal medicines from 52 to 56, and medical devices from 287 to 349.
Focus on Critical Health Categories
To address specific medical needs, the government has strengthened the list by including a wide range of medicines for critical conditions. For 2025-26, the EDL features 116 cardiac medicines, 56 cancer drugs, 75 neurological disorder medications, and 43 psychiatric medicines, among others. This targeted approach aims to improve treatment outcomes for patients with serious health issues.
The revision process involved careful evaluation to ensure that the most essential and effective drugs are prioritized, reflecting the state's commitment to public health. By expanding the list, Gujarat aims to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients and enhance the quality of healthcare services across all levels.
This initiative is part of the state's ongoing efforts to align with national health policies and respond to evolving medical needs. The updated essential drugs list is expected to benefit millions of residents, particularly those in underserved areas, by ensuring timely access to necessary medications without financial burden.
