Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Launches Major HPV Vaccination Campaign

In a significant public health initiative, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu officially launched a comprehensive state-level Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign on Saturday. The campaign, aimed at preventing cervical cancer, was inaugurated from the prestigious Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla.

Ambitious Vaccination Targets and Public Appeal

Under this ambitious campaign, approximately 65,000 girls aged 14 years across the state are slated to receive the HPV vaccine within the next 90 days. Chief Minister Sukhu made a fervent appeal to parents, panchayat representatives, and health workers to actively support this crucial initiative. He emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about vaccination to ensure maximum participation and public health benefit.

Addressing the Rising Cancer Burden

Expressing deep concern over the increasing incidence of cancer cases, CM Sukhu highlighted that early detection and proper management are key to making the disease treatable. He reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to healthcare reforms, operating under the guiding slogan "Vyavastha Parivartan" (System Transformation).

Major Healthcare Infrastructure Investments Announced

In a landmark announcement, Sukhu revealed plans for the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital in Hamirpur, with an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore. This facility is designed to provide affordable and advanced cancer treatment within the state, reducing the need for patients to travel elsewhere.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister outlined an aggressive timeline for medical infrastructure upgrades:

  • Advanced medical equipment will be installed at IGMC and other state medical colleges within the next eight months.
  • Over the next three years, zonal hospitals, primary health centres, and community health centres are planned to be equipped with AIIMS-level facilities.
  • A substantial budget of Rs 3,000 crore has been earmarked specifically for the procurement of high-end medical equipment across these facilities.

Expansion of Robotic Surgery Capabilities

Adding to the technological advancements, CM Sukhu announced that robotic surgery facilities would be introduced in all five medical colleges of Himachal Pradesh. Following the successful launch of robotic surgery at AIIMS Chamiyana in Shimla and Tanda Medical College in Kangra, the same advanced facility is scheduled to commence operations at IGMC starting March 10.

Free Vaccination and Program Integration

State Health Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (retd) confirmed that the HPV vaccine would be provided free of cost to all eligible beneficiaries. Importantly, the vaccination will be incorporated into the state's routine immunization programme, ensuring it is administered under strict medical supervision and as part of a sustained public health strategy.

This multi-pronged approach—combining immediate vaccination drives with long-term infrastructure development—signals a robust and holistic effort by the Himachal Pradesh government to tackle cervical cancer and enhance overall healthcare delivery in the state.
