A 65-year-old woman was seriously injured after being attacked by a hyena in Amiliya village of Singrauli district on Saturday morning. The vicious attack left the woman's palm hanging from the wrist, with only a small portion remaining attached.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
According to police reports, the woman, identified as Mankumari, wife of Singhlal Vishwakarma, had ventured toward a forested area near her home when the hyena allegedly pounced on her. The animal caused multiple severe injuries, nearly severing her palm completely. Villagers rushed to the scene after hearing her desperate screams and managed to drive the hyena away before shifting her to the district hospital-cum-trauma centre for urgent medical attention.
Critical Condition and Ongoing Treatment
The woman is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, where her condition is reported to be critical. District forest officer Akhil Bansal confirmed the incident, stating, "The woman has sustained injuries due to a hyena attack and her treatment is going on." Bandhora police outpost in-charge ML Bansal also verified the identity of the injured woman and confirmed that medical care is continuing.
Local Concerns About Wildlife Encounters
A local villager, Awadhesh Prasad Sahu, provided additional context about the incident and the area's wildlife challenges. "The incident took place on Saturday morning when the 65-year-old woman was going towards the forest," Sahu explained. "The hyena attacked her so severely that her palm remained hanging from the wrist as if it had been completely broken. Only a small portion remained attached."
Sahu further noted that wildlife encounters are common in the village, saying, "Seeing bears and hyenas is common here in our village. There have been bear attacks in the past too." This statement highlights ongoing concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Authorities Respond to the Incident
Forest and police teams are now monitoring the area amid growing concerns over the frequent movement of wild animals near human settlements. The incident has raised alarms about safety measures and wildlife management in villages bordering forested regions of Singrauli district.
The attack underscores the persistent challenges faced by communities living close to wildlife habitats and the urgent need for effective strategies to prevent such dangerous encounters in the future.
